Colourless and odourless at standard temperature and pressures, radon is naturally present in the atmosphere, in rocks, in building materials and in the water. The decay of its isotopes, can mimic the signals of the particles searched for in the experiments. The water used to shield the detectors from cosmic rays is purified from radon in a ‘’stripping column’’.
