Permeable to water but not to dissolved ions and molecules, it is used in the water purification process.
The reverse osmosis is a very delicate purification process, in which dissolved ions and molecules are eliminated from the water. It is made of semipermeable membranes made of polymers or inorganic materials. Inside the membrane, water, pushed by an external pressure, passes through several successive layers that gradually block the unwanted dissolved contaminants.
